Venezuela's prosecutor office had opened an investigation into the alleged acts of corruption by opposition leader Juan Guaido and his representatives, the Prosecutor General Tarek William Saab said Tuesday.

At least two representatives allegedly misappropriated the funds earmarked for lodging Venezuelans in Colombia's border town Cututa, including the alleged military deserters from Venezuela, Saab said, referring to a report by Venezuelan news website "PanAm Post."

Saab accused Rossana Barrera and Kevin Rojas as "the material author of the act," while "Guaido is the intellectual author."

His office planned to charge them for money laundering, corruption, and conspiracy, Saab said.

These people also allegedly falsified invoices and inflated the number of the deserters to "justify the squandering of the money," he said.

The money is "assigned from Venezuela, so it is up to our jurisdiction to investigate, both its source and its use," he added.

Saab said that Guaido, with the support of the United States and other foreign powers, sought to usurp the post of the president of the Republic, and was the direct leader of those involved in the corruption scheme.

The prosecutor indicated that they would request the Colombian authorities to provide "all the evidence they have there concerning these facts."

Venezuela has been plunged into political unrest after Guaido proclaimed himself the "interim president" in January.
