Five people were killed on Monday after a student demonstration in El Obeid, capital city of Sudan's North Kordofan State, turned violent, official SUNA news agency reported.
"The number of people who were killed during the event in El Obied city reached five, including three high school students and two citizens," Al-Sadiq Al-Tayeb Abdalla, governor of North Kordofan State, was quoted as saying.
The demonstration initially demanded peacefully improvement of transportation service but swerved from its goals with the impact of the "infiltrators" in the students, he noted.
He accused the "infiltrators" of attacking the branch of the Bank of Khartoum and looting equipment and properties, noting all necessary legal measures have been taken.
Abdalla said a committee has been formed to investigate the events and bring the perpetrators to trial.
Earlier, the governor issued a decision declaring curfew in the state in the wake of the demonstration, while the state's security committee issued a decision suspending classes at all schools of the state.
