The director of the Las Cruces Prison in southern Mexican city of Acapulco has been suspended from his post and put under investigation after the death of 28 prisoners during a riot, the state government announced Friday.

The violence broke out early Thursday after prisoners broke into cells of rival gang members in the Las Cruces Social Readaptation Center, according to the official report.

In a radio interview, the security spokesperson of the state of Guerrero, Roberto Alvarez Heredia, explained that director Miguel Angel Gomez Garduno had been suspended from his post during the investigation into the violence.

About 30 to 50 staff members of the prison, including guards, are also being questioned by investigators, who are seeking to identify any missing information from the government report, said Heredia.

The state police has now taken control of the prison, which houses around 2,100 prisoners.
