Madagascar reports 1st coronavirus death

Madagascar reported the first case of death related to COVID-19 on Sunday, according to the spokesperson of Madagascar's COVID-19 Operational Command Center Hanta Vololontiana.

Vololontiana confirmed that the deceased was a 57-year-old Malagasy, who worked in the hospital of Toamasina, the second largest city in the country.

With the rising number of confirmed cases in the last few days, President Andry Rajoelina said Saturday evening during a statement the decision to extend the state of emergency until May 30.

Madagascar has so far 304 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 190 still in treatment.
