The United Nations Higher Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) on Monday said that 76 refugees have been rescued off Libya's western coast, reported Xinhua.
"Yesterday evening, 76 refugees and migrants were brought back to Al Khoms (western Libya) after being intercepted at sea," UNHCR tweeted.
Encouraged by the state of insecurity and chaos that plagued the country since the 2011 fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime, illegal immigrants choose to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Libya towards Europe.
UNHCR estimates that more than 2,200 refugees and migrants are being held in detention centers in Libya.
