Report shows race, gender pay disparity among NYC municipal workers

White municipal workers across the five boroughs of New York City make about 7,600 U.S. dollars more a year on average than Black employees, and about 6,500 U.S. dollars more than Asian workers, reported Xinhua, quoting a recent City Council report.

Non-Latino city workers roughly make about 8,700 U.S. dollars more a year on average than workers who identify as Latino, said the report that showed a wide gap in municipal pay across both racial and gender lines.

The analysis of salaries of roughly 180,000 full-time city workers also showed that men who work for the city generally make about 4,500 U.S. dollars a year more than women.

"These preliminary findings are troubling," City Council Speaker Corey Johnson was quoted as saying. "For too long, the many contributions of women and people of color have been short-changed. It's incumbent on all of us to make sure we are working to right those wrongs, and address the biases and discriminatory practices that contribute to pay and opportunity gaps."

The data was made available in response to a law enacted last year to identify and address pay disparities among city workers.
