Guatemala City's La Aurora International Airport has remained closed as a precautionary measure due to the volcanic ash sent by the Pacaya volcano, reported Xinhua.
The volcano, located 43 km southwest of the capital Guatemala City, reported intense eruptive activity, with magma pulses sending thick plumes of ash to beyond 3,500 meters above sea level.
Images of the Guatemalan capital showed the city blanketed by ash.
The general population has been urged to wear masks and protective eyewear if they have to leave their homes.
