India records highest 103,558 COVID-19 cases daily spike

Asia-Pacific countries are facing growing cases of the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday as India reported 103,558 new infections, the highest of this year, taking the total to 12,589,067, reported Xinhua.

With 478 deaths since Sunday morning, the death toll in the country stood at 165,101.

There are still 741,830 active cases in India, while 11,682,136 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment.

The Philippines' Department of Health reported 8,355 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 803,398.

The death toll climbed to 13,435 after 10 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

The steady rise in cases prompted the government to reimpose a raft of strict lockdown restrictions in Metro Manila and four adjacent provinces to contain the spread of the virus. Metro Manila is still the epicenter of the outbreak, with the most active and new cases.

Bangladesh reported 7,075 new cases and 52 new deaths, making the tally at 644,439 and the death toll at 9,318, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The official data showed that 30,239 samples were tested in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 555,414, including 2,932 new recoveries on Monday, said the DGHS.

The confirmed cases in Indonesia rose by 3,712 within one day to 1,537,967 on Monday, with the death toll adding by 146 to 41,815, the Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, 5,800 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,381,677.

South Korea reported 473 more cases, raising the total number of infections to 105,752.

Of the new cases, 149 were Seoul residents and 108 were people residing in Gyeonggi province.

Twenty-four cases were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 7,703.

Four more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 1,748.

Thailand recorded a surge in coronavirus infection with 194 new cases, mainly due to clusters found in a prison in the southern Narathiwat province and bars in the capital Bangkok, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of Monday's new cases, 182 were domestic infections and 12 others were imported, CCSA spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangsan said.

Of the domestic cases, 94 were confirmed in the Narathiwat prison and 46 in Bangkok, among other provinces.

Thailand has so far confirmed a total of 29,321 cases of infection, of which 27,840 patients have fully recovered and been released from hospitals while 1,386 others are currently hospitalized and 95 fatalities have been reported.
