One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at a suburban New York grocery store Tuesday morning and investigators were searching for the shooter, local police said.
The shooting occurred at an office of a Stop & Shop grocery store in West Hempstead, New York, according to police.
"The Person of Interest involved is Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, age 30," the Nassau County Police Department said in a tweet, adding he was last seen heading westbound on Hempstead Turnpike wearing a black baseball hat and a black sweatshirt.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the person of interest had been an employee of the store, but it was unclear if he was still employed at the time of the shooting.
Witnesses told police he had a small handgun. A motive for the attack was still under investigation, said Ryder.
Nearby schools have been notified to go into lockdown, and authorities were asking residents to remain indoors.
