Moroccan security services have foiled two smuggling operations of more than ten tonnes of cannabis, local press reported on Sunday, reported Xinhua.

During the first operation, more than eight tonnes of cannabis were seized on Saturday by the Royal Gendarmerie on board a truck parked inside an agricultural estate in the central city of Taroudant, Barlamane.com news website said.

Many people with suspected links to a criminal drug trafficking network were arrested, it added.

A total of two tons of cannabis were seized in the second operation in the city of Agadir, official RIM radio reported.

Seven people aged between 20 and 57, were arrested for their alleged links to a criminal network active in international drug trafficking, organization of illegal immigration and human trafficking, it added.

Despite efforts in the past decade to crack down on cannabis harvesting, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producer of the cannabis resin.
