Police discovered 10 Afghans hiding in the back of a truck in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, reported dpa.

The truck driver, who is from Romania, had previously called the emergency services because he heard knocking noises during the rest stop.

Ten Afghans aged between 14 and 20 were then found in the back of the truck in a car park on the A38 motorway near the village of Grosskorbetha, the federal police in Magdeburg reported on Sunday.

They said they had got into the truck with the help of a smuggler in Romania.

According to their own statements, the young Afghans came to Germany via Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The 43-year-old driver could not be proven to have known about the smuggling.

According to the federal police, it is the 25th case of this kind in Saxony-Anhalt this year.
