A bomb explosion struck a civilian vehicle in Yemen's southern port city of Aden on Tuesday evening, killing a female journalist along with her newborn, a security official told Xinhua.
"An improvised explosive device (IED) exploded and killed Rasha Abdullah, a female journalist, inside her own car in Aden's neighborhood of KhorMaksar," the local security source said on condition of anonymity.
The source said that the IED explosion killed Rasha along with her newborn, and critically wounded her husband Mahmoud Otamy, who is also a reporter for an Emirati television network. He was moved to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Initial information indicated that an IED attached previously to the vehicle carrying the two journalists and detonated remotely by terror elements, according to the official.
A series of car bombings and IEDs blasts struck state institutions including the sole airport and other military bases located in the strategic southern port city of Aden during the past several weeks.
Local authorities are trying to maintain security and stability in the strategic Yemeni port city, which is considered as the country's temporary capital. However, sporadic bombing incidents and drive-by shootings still occur in Aden.
Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014, when the Houthi rebels seized control of several northern provinces and forced the internationally-recognized government of Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.
