At least five people were killed and 124 others injured by stray bullets during a "gunfire" celebration over a football victory in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, local health authorities said Tuesday, reported Xinhua.

The celebration was held on Monday after Yemen's under-16 boys' football team defeated Saudi Arabia to win the West Asia Junior football championship.

The victory prompted the frantic celebration in the Houthi-held capital, during which many people fired live rounds into the sky.

The stray bullets killed and injured many in the densely populated city, local health officials said, describing the shootings as "uncalculated actions."

They also urged the residents to express their joy responsibly and refrain from shooting and other dangerous behaviors.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since September 2014 when the Houthi militia forced the internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.
