US President Joe Biden has told Congress that Vladimir Putin badly misjudged how the West would hit back once he invaded Ukraine, reported British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In a primetime speech, Biden vowed "an unwavering resolve that freedom will always triumph over tyranny".

Democrats and Republicans reacted to Biden's appeal to show support for Ukraine by rising in unison to applaud, said the BBC report.

His State of the Union address came as pandemic-weary Americans grapple with galloping inflation.

In an hour-long address to lawmakers on Tuesday night, the Democratic president said: "Putin's war was premeditated and unprovoked. He rejected repeated efforts at diplomacy.”

Biden also announced that the United States will close its airspace to all Russian planes in response to Moscow's attack in Ukraine, reported Xinhua.

"Tonight I'm announcing that we will join our allies in closing off American airspace to all Russian flights, further isolating Russia and adding additional squeeze on their economy," Biden said.

The U.S. move followed similar ones made by the European Union and Canada on Sunday.

In retaliation, the Russian aviation authority said Monday that Russia will ban airlines from 36 countries, including the 27 members of the EU, from using the country's airspace.
