Ten miners are still trapped a day after a coalpit cave-in in northern Mexico's Coahuila state, the national coordinator of civil protection Laura Velazquez said Thursday, reported Xinhua.

Five other miners managed to get out of the pit, located in the town of Sabinas, though they suffered injuries, said Velazquez, adding two of them had left the hospital.

According to Velazquez, the collapse occurred at 1:35 p.m. local time, when miners dug into an adjoining area containing water.

Water flooded three pits connected by tunnels, trapping the miners, Velazquez explained via video link at the daily press conference held by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The president broke the news on Wednesday, posting on Twitter that at least nine miners had been trapped following a cave-in.

Some 269 rescue workers from different agencies are working to free the miners, with the help of 60 vehicles and five submersible pumps, said Velazquez.
