Israeli police shot dead a Palestinian man after he attempted to stab police officers during a raid in East Jerusalem on Monday, reported Xinhua.

The Palestinian and some members of his family clashed with Israeli police officers when they approached his home in the northern part of East Jerusalem to search for illegal weapons, Israeli police said in a statement.

"The main suspect held a knife and attempted to stab the officers, who responded with fire -- and neutralized him," the statement notes.

He was pronounced dead after receiving medical care from Israeli military paramedics, it added.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA identified the victim as 21-year-old Mohammad Ibrahim Shaham and reported that he was shot dead at point-blank range.

Hussein al-Sheikh, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee, demanded on Twitter an urgent international investigation into the killing.

Meanwhile, 19 Palestinians were arrested overnight in raids in different locations across the West Bank, the Israeli military said in a separate statement.

The incident came a day after a gun-wielding Palestinian opened fire at a bus near East Jerusalem's Old City, injuring eight.

Over the past months, Israeli forces have frequently carried out nightly raids in the occupied West Bank to search for the suspects of deadly attacks in Israeli cities in April and May, triggering clashes with Palestinians, in which several Palestinians were killed or injured.
