Iran and Turkey on Thursday highlighted the need to continue cooperation between their armed forces to improve bilateral military relations, reported Xinhua, quoting Iran's official news agency IRNA.

This came as Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Baqeri held a phone talk with new Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, the report said.

Baqeri described Iran and Turkey as two "good and strategic" neighbors that have a common border of "peace and friendship."

He called for holding meetings between officials at different levels, exchanging experience and technology between their training and educational centers, and staging joint military drills.

Baqeri also invited the Turkish minister to visit Tehran.

Guler, for his part, also stressed the importance of expanding the military ties between the two countries.

He also lauded Iran's "brotherly and friendly" aid provided to the Turkish people after the deadly earthquakes struck Turkey in February.
