Japan has shown its support for Morocco's efforts within the autonomy initiative aimed at resolving the issue of the Moroccan Sahara region.

In a meeting between Japan's Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, and Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, held in Tokyo, Japan expressed its appreciation for the serious and credible steps taken by Morocco, reported MAP, the state-owned news agency of the Kingdom of Morocco on Friday.

The Moroccan autonomy initiative, introduced in 2007 to the UN Secretary-General, has been highlighted by Japan as a significant effort towards finding a resolution for the Moroccan Sahara issue. Japan's Foreign Minister, Kamikawa, reiterated the country's longstanding position on the matter, emphasizing the importance of Morocco's commitment to advancing the process towards a peaceful settlement.

During the discussions, Minister Bourita conveyed his gratitude for Japan's support and recognition of Morocco's endeavors in addressing the Moroccan Sahara situation.

Japan's endorsement adds to the growing international backing for Morocco's autonomy plan, with more than 120 countries among which 18 European countries now standing in support with the initiative in addition to those recognizing the moroccanity of the Sahara like the US, Arab countries and the Majority of African States.

The positive stance taken by Japan underscores the global recognition of Morocco's dedication to finding a lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the issue.

As Morocco continues to engage with the international community through diplomatic efforts and initiatives like the autonomy plan, the support from countries like Japan further strengthens the momentum towards a peaceful resolution in the Moroccan Sahara region.
