At least 40 people were killed when a boat capsized Sunday evening on the Congo River near Kindu, the capital of Maniema Province in the central-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), reported Xinhua, quoting local media on Tuesday.
At least 40 bodies were recovered from the waters after a boat, named "ABC-BONOBO," carrying about 50 passengers, capsized in circumstances that have not yet been clarified, according to the reports.
Mussa Kabwankubi, the governor of the province, on Tuesday declared three days of provincial mourning and reaffirmed his determination to shed light on the tragedy.
In June 2024, at least 86 people, including 21 children, were killed after a boat sank on the Kwa River, one of the tributaries of the Congo River, in the province of Mai-Ndombe, in the western DRC.
