Edward A. Caban, the New York City police commissioner, announced his resignation in an email to the Police Department on Thursday, eight days after federal agents seized his phone as part of a criminal investigation, reported Xinhua.

Caban's resignation marked the first high-profile departure from Adams' administration since the start of four separate federal investigations into his office and the New York Police Department.

Caban, 57, had been under pressure to resign from the mayor's administration, which had asked him to step aside on Monday, said The New York Times.

The investigations involved Caban's brother and enforcement around nightclubs in New York City, according to CNN.

Federal investigators also seized electronic devices from the homes of several top officials of Adams' administration last week, it added.
