US Vice President Kamala Harris has cancelled her planned visit to Germany in light of the wildfires currently sweeping through the Greater Los Angeles area, the White House announced, reported dpa.
Originally scheduled for January 17, Harris had planned to visit Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany, where she was set to engage with US troops stationed there.
The trip, which would have been her last foreign trip as US vice president, had also been set to include stops at US military bases in Singapore and Bahrain.
However, in response to the historic wildfires wreaking havoc in the Los Angeles area, Harris decided to remain in the US to help with the government's relief efforts, the White House said in a statement.
On Wednesday, outgoing US President Joe Biden had already cancelled his planned trip to Italy due to the wildfires.
On January 20, Republican Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated as president, and Harris, alongside Biden, will leave office.
