The death toll from the heavy rains that have hit Madagascar since Feb. 14 rose to 22, according to the latest report from the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) released on Monday, reported Xinhua.

These deaths occurred in six regions, mainly as a result of drowning and house collapses, said the report, adding that three other people were injured.

About 20,000 people, or more than 5,200 households, have been affected, mainly in the Analamanga, Menabe, and Vatovavy regions. Over 13,000 people have been displaced and are currently housed in 32 temporary accommodation sites.

The BNGRC also expressed regret over the flooding of 3,671 houses, 15 of which were destroyed.

According to the weather forecast, heavy rains will continue in Madagascar over the next few days, especially in the western and southern regions.
