The Hamas-run Gaza media office said in a statement on Thursday that the death toll from the Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip over the past 72 hours has risen to 591, in addition to 1,042 wounded who have arrived at hospitals, reported Xinhua.

Meanwhile, the Gaza-based health authorities said the number of deaths recorded since early Thursday has risen to 85, adding that "a number of victims are still under the rubble, and efforts are underway to retrieve them."

In its statement, the Gaza media office held the Israeli army and the U.S. administration fully responsible for the continued "mass killing" in Gaza, stressing that "the aggression will not terrorize the Palestinian people or break their steadfastness."

It called on the international community to pressure Israel to reopen the border crossings and allow the entry of medical and humanitarian aid into the territory.

The Israeli army has been carrying out intensive airstrikes since dawn of Tuesday on various areas in the Gaza Strip, shattering a two-month ceasefire.
