A four-year-old girl was shot on Tuesday night in front of her home in southern Chicago, bringing the number of young victims of gun violence to 52 this year.

The girl was sitting on the porch with parents when a car pulled up to her home in the south side of the city and someone in it opened fire at her, said police.

The girl was rushed to hospital and reported "in stable condition" and talking to her family on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, local police said that they were making "good progress" in probing the case.

"Detectives (are) making good progress at this early stage. An individual at the home has a history with Chicago Police Department and may possibly have been intended target of the shooting," tweeted Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for Chicago police.

So far in 2018, 52 young shooting victims have been reported in Chicago, six of them dead.

Since September 2011, at least 171 people under 17 years old have been killed in shootings and at least 1,634 people in that age bracket have been shot in the city, according to the data compiled by Chicago Tribune.
