California police warn of new sighting of mountain lion in residential area

A mountain lion has been spotted for the second time in three days in an residential area in Lakeport City in northern California, police said Sunday.

Lakekport Police Department received a report that a mountain lion was seen at Westside Park earlier Sunday in the brush adjacent to a dog park, and the area is north of Westside Park Drive., where there are numerous residential units and businesses.

"MOUNTAIN LION AGAIN SEEN AT WESTSIDE PARK, SECOND TIME IN THREE DAYS," Lakeport Police@LakeportPolice tweeted.

Police said the lion is believed to be a juvenile based on the description and behavior of the animal.

"Juveniles can be pushed out of areas where adult lions hunt and are more likely to be seen in town than an adult," the police said in a statement.

This is the second sighting of a mountain lion in a residential area in the past three days.

On Wednesday, Hillsborough Police Department in the San Francisco Bay Area warned residents of the threat of a mountain lion captured on trail cameras dragging a deer off a porch, when the deer was eating potted flowers of a home owner.

The police said deer are the primary prey of mountain lions in the wild.

Mountain lion attacks on humans are extremely rare. However, conflicts are increasing as California's human population expands into mountain lion habitat, according to information released by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
