A majority of Americans believe democracy in the United States is "getting weaker," according to a poll released Tuesday.

Fifty-five percent of Americans said U.S. democracy was currently "weak," and even larger majority, 68 percent, said they believe it's getting weaker, showed the bipartisan poll commissioned by the George W. Bush Institute, The Biden Center at the University of Pennsylvania and Freedom House.

The poll found that partisan divide over opinions on the state of democracy in the United States is deep.

While 79 percent of Democrats said democracy is getting weaker, only 47 percent of Republicans said the same.

The poll was conducted with 1,700 participants from April 28 to May 8, 2018. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.6 percent.
