At least six people were killed on Monday after a perimeter wall collapsed on their residential houses in Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa, following heavy rainfall in the region.

Mombasa police chief Lucas Ogara said four children and their mother died after being buried alive as they were sheltering from the rain. The sixth victim was a cassava vendor at a nearby kiosk.

"The perimeter wall collapsed on the residential house due to the heavy rains, killing six on the spot," Ogara said. "We are still conducting search and rescue operation at the scene."

Mombasa authorities have warned of possible mudslide and more flooding in the county and set up emergency rescue teams to assist victims due to the heavy rains that have many roads inaccessible.

Heavy rains have continued to wreak havoc in the coastal city. Some houses in Likoni, Changamwe, Kisauni, and Nyali have been partly submerged.
