U.S. federal prosecutors said Thursday a California man has been charged with sending death threats to an employee of the Boston Globe, which organized an anti-Trump editorial campaign earlier this month.

The suspect, 68-year-old Robert Chain, has made more than a dozen of threatening phone calls to the Globe's newsroom between Aug. 10 and Aug. 22, according to prosecutors.

On the day the editorials were released, Chain threatened to shoot employees at the Globe, which prompted a police response and heightened security at the office.

The Boston Globe, along with hundreds of U.S. media outlets, released similar editorials on Aug. 15 to criticize U.S. President Donald Trump's anti-media rhetoric. The campaign was joined by major news outlets such as the New York Times and regional press alike.

Conservative media, including right-leaning Wall Street Journal did not participate in the campaign.
