A jogger wearing headphones and sunglasses was hit and killed Friday by a commuter train in a neighborhood in San Jose, the largest city in Northern California, the railroad authorities said.

An Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) train struck the man who was jogging with headphones on in the area of Gold Street and Guadalupe River Trail in San Jose in the Bay Area, an ACE spokesperson said.

The fatality appears to be a "tragic accident," and train crews do not believe the person intentionally stepped in front of the train, the NBC Bay Area news outlet quoted the ACE spokesman Steve Walker as saying.

ACE train reported the accident earlier on social media without mentioning it as a fatality.

"ACE 5 struck a trespasser between Fremont and Great America. This will cause delays to ACE 5 and ACE 7," ACE Train@ACE_train tweeted.

San Jose Police Department also confirmed the deadly incident, saying police dispatchers received several emergency calls about a jogger "on the tracks near Lafayette and Gold streets" being hit by an ACE train.

Police said the incident will be investigated by the railway operator.

ACE officials said no other people were injured at the time of the crash, when there were 436 passengers and four crew members on board the commuter train. The incident caused system-wide delays for hours.
