1 police shot dead, 4 injured in South Carolina

A suspect has been taken in custody after one police was killed while four others injured in a shooting on Wednesday in the city of Florence, U.S. state South Carolina, the authorities said.

One of the five police officers shot has died, Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken told CNN affiliate WBTW.

"Active shooting situation is over and the suspect is in custody," the Florence County Emergency Management Department tweeted.

Three Florence County Sheriff's Office deputies and two city officers were shot, chief deputy Glenn Kirby said, according to CNN affiliates.

Florence, located in the northeastern corner of South Carolina, hosts a population of roughly 37,000. Local reports said the shooting took place in an upscale neighborhood in the city.
