Algeria on Sunday condemned the murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying it believes the Saudi justice will shed light on the issue.

"Algeria shares strong cooperation ties and common destiny with brotherly Saudi Arabia, as it expresses its conviction that Saudi justice will be able to shed light on this assassination," Algerian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abdelaziz Benali Cherif said in a statement.

On Oct. 20, Saudi Arabia officially announced the death of Khashoggi, two weeks after his disappearance, saying he was killed after a "brawl" with some Saudi officials inside its consulate in Turkey's Istanbul.

Saudi authorities said they have since arrested 18 suspects, all of whom are from Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Riyadh issued a series of royal orders exempting high-ranking security officials, including deputy Intelligence chief Ahmed al-Asiri.

Khashoggi, a former columnist for The Washington Post, went missing after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 to obtain documents for his marriage.
