Death toll of Indonesia's flood, landslide climbs to 59

Indonesian disaster authority has put the total casualty of floods, landslides and whirlwind in central parts of the country at 59 while search and evacuation of survivors continue, senior disaster official said here on Friday.

A total of 25 people remain missing and some 47 others suffer from wounds after torrential rain led a dam burst its bank on Tuesday and submerged a total of 13 districts in South Sulawesi province, spokesman of national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

The other impact of the natural disasters, Sutopo said that they have forced a total of 3,481 people to flee home and take shelters after destroying 79 houses, 10 bridges, 12 resinous buildings, 22 school buildings and six government office buildings.

Gowa district, followed by Jeneponto district, was hit the hardest by the natural disaster, with 44 out of the total casualty were retrieved in the district, according to Sutopo.

Heavy downpour-triggered landslides also pound dozens of houses in Pattalikang village of Gowa district, he said.

Despite the floodwater has receded in some affected areas, "the joint forced rescue team still conduct evacuation, search and rescue for the victims," the spokesman told Xinhua in a text message.

Emergency relief aids keep flowing into the impacted-people, including financial assistance, logistics, tents, fast foods, foods and others, Sutopo said.

Field kitchens and transient shelters have been set up, according to the agency.
