Russia will not support a draft resolution on Venezuela, which the United States intends to propose later on Thursday to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
"There is nothing new in it but the same mixture of demagogy, stereotypical indictments and ultimatums," Zakharova said at a news briefing, commenting on the U.S. draft.
The Russian delegation has proposed its own draft resolution, "a far more constructive one, containing an approach based on respect for the UN Charter and the principles of international law," she said.
Zakharova said the Russian draft proposes various dialogue and mediation mechanisms with broad international participation and a procedure for coordinating international assistance and other initiatives regarding Venezuela.
Russia does not harbor illusions about the readiness of the United States to listen to the voice of reason and to demonstrate a constructive approach to the situation in Venezuela, Zakharova said.
Moscow will continue to aim at eradicating in the international public consciousness the very idea of the possibility of solving the Venezuelan problem by force, she said.
Russia will also continue to provide effective assistance to the constructive international mechanisms and initiatives aimed at reaching an internal political settlement in Venezuela, Zakharova said.
